Abstract: | This book provides a comprehensive survey of the politics in North West Africa, inclusing analyses of the institutional structure of Bourguiba's Tunisia, the ideology and internal developments of Libya since the coup that brought colonel Qaddafi to power in 1969, the attempts to institute a single-party system in Algeria and Mauritania, and the modernization of traditional monarchy in Morocco. The economic development of the region is described in detail, but with especial emphasis on agrarian reform and the efforts being made to improve agriculture and establish industries. Particular attention is given to Algerian oil and the part played by Libya in the diplomacy of oil exporting countries. Relations among the five states are analysed, as are their foreign policies in general. Recent trends in population, production and foreign trade are demonstrated by means of 20 statistical tables. |
