Abstract:The term 'umma' has for some time served as the equivalent in modern literary Arabic of 'nation' of 'nation-state' of Western political and historical literature. The author studies its meaning in Islamic society from the days of Muhammad, and from the 18th century until 1914 in Egypt, paying special attention to the journalistic writings of Ahmad Lutfi al-SAYYID (1872-1963). Appendix: four selected articles by Ahmad Lutfi al-SAYYID in Al-Jarinda.
