| Abstract: | An interdisciplinary group of papers devoted to the use of the environment in Africa, the problems faced by its users and the consequences of change. Alongside general analyses are set microlevel studies, focusing in the main on pastoralism and the semi-arid regions of, in particular, the Sudan, Kenya and the West African Sahel. The common result of these analyses is to view African landuse as a sophisticated and sensitive system, created and frequently adjusted by the people, but threatenend at the present time by development plans which pay insufficient attention to the all important ecological balance. |
