| Abstract: | The Dar Fur sultanate was an African kingdom and a Muslim state in what is now western Sudan. This book presents a study of the administration of the sultanate in the 18th and 19th centuries drawn from recently-discovered Arabic land charters. Translations of 47 selected charters and related documents are presented to illustrate the complexity of land as an issue in the sultanate. The principles by which priviliged status, rights in people and in landed estates were granted, are reviewed and the nature of the administration in Dar Fur is examined. |
