| Abstract: | The independence of Zimbabwe in 1980 dramatically reduced violence, but did not eradicate it. By 1982, in the Eastern Highlands and in Matabeleland in the south-west violence remained a continuing problem. The author examines the conflict in Matabeleland from the perspective of Harare, attempts to unravel the complexities of local politics, and suggests some of the consequences for Zimbabwe of the violence that has disfigured Matabeleland in recent months. |
