| Abstract: | In recent years a number of criticisms have been advanced of some of the characteristic features of underdevelopment. In theoretical terms these encompass the confrontation of different understandings of capitalism as a mode of production, and of the historical investigation of its pervasively uneven development. In terms of method, they encompass a reaction against the mechanical determinism of much 'world system' type analysis. In political terms, they encompass the need for more rigorous and refined analysis of the prospects and limitations of particular conjunctures of struggle. This schematic outline indicated the kind of issues addressed, explicitly and implicitly, by the six papers in this collection. The following countries are dealt with: Lesotho, Nigeria, Kenya, Guinée, Mali and the Ivory Coast. |
