Abstract:This study sets the story of the Carrier Corps, raised in 1914 in the East Africa Protectorate for the conquest of German East Africa, against its human and political background, with special reference to Kenya. It pays attention to the origins of the East Africa campaign, the defensive strategy during 1914-1916, the offensive of 1916 and the conquest of German East Africa, the carriers' pay, recruitment of carriers and repatriation after 1918, rations and medicine, the life and work of the carriers, mission contributions to the war effort, the war and political protest, postwar life and attitudes, and the Carrier Corps in Kenyan history.
