| Abstract: | Recurring theme of the work is the process of formation and perception of social and ethnic identity within the framework of the assimilation effort. A form of ethnic group formation and of emphasizing ethnic distinctiveness is emerging among the Falashas mainly as a corollary of the migration and absorption process still underway, and this may gain significance in the near future. Six appendices: A note on Falasha research 1844-1892 - A note on fieldwork - Example of a traditional Falasha genealogy - Glossary of kinship terms in Amharic and Tigrinya - Glossary of Hebrew, Amharic and Tigrinya words - Maps. |
