Abstract:In 1683, the Brandenburg African Company (1682-1720) built a fort, Gross-Friedrichsburg, just west of Cape Three Points on the Gold Coast, and in 1687 it acquired the island of Arguin in what is now northwestern Mauritania. The book covers only the first half of the life of the company, because in 1701 the Elector of Brandenburg made himself 'King in Prussia', so that the period after 1701 may be considered part of the history of the Kingdom of Prussia. It consists of translations in English, with footnotes and explanations, of 91 Dutch and German documents mainly dealing with the two trading posts and contributing substantially to an understanding of African history. Four appendices: Original Dutch and German texts - Commandants of Gross-Friedrichsburg (1683-1716) and Arguin (1687-1721) - Glossary - Chronological table.
