Abstract:Preface by Judith BRUCE and Ingrid PALMER. The K(ano) R(iver) P(roject) is a gravity flow irrigation scheme that lies about 50 kms south of Kano City and covers some 120.000 acres of Northern Nigeria. The first fields were irrigated in January 1971. The three stated project objectives were to increase food supply, to provide employment opportunities, and to improve the standard of living. The paper is based on a study conducted between 1976 and 1978. It looks at the consequences for women of the project in terms of both their economic contributions and their overall gains. The KRP is of particular interest in that two very different groups of women, one Pagan and one Muslim, were affected. The different cultural background of these women led to very different impacts and adaptations.
