| Abstract: | In 1975 a group of poor women in rural Mali joined togehter in the Markala cooperative in order to earn a regular salary and to learn marketable skills. It represents an attempt by one group of women to master their changed situation. The present report originated in response to a request by memebers of the Markala cooperative that the Ministry of Rural Development provide them with technical assistance in assessing their financial situation and with advise on how to increase revenues. Data were collected in August and September 1980, and the findings are set out in five parts: a sketch of the Markala cooperative; women's world in Markala; the Markala cooperative assessed; observations for planners; conclusions. |
