| Abstract: | Foreword by Martin E. WEST, Professor of Social Anthropology, University of Cape Town. The Ju/wa San or Bushman people of the Nyae Nyae region in the northern Kalahari desert - extending for over 45 000 km2 lying north and south along both sides of the Namibia/Botswana border - were the last independent hunters and gatherers in southern Africa. This report describes some of the irreversible changes that have overtaken them since 1960. It includes: a genealogical census; observation of activities; diet surveys; residence movement patterns; livestock management; and economic/work histories of selected individuals. Four appendices: Rainfall table - Breakdown of the authors' current population estimates Summary of a poll conducted in 1982 on the establishment of a Mature Conservation Area in eastern Bushmanland - Residence tables. |
