| Abstract: | Reprint of some of the essays written by Winifred HOERNLE (1885-1960) to commemorate the centenary of her birth. The papers fall into three sections: an overview which examines the state of social anthropology in 1933; five papers dealing with the Nama and certain other Khoikhoi (Hottentots), published between 1913 and 1925; and three papers on the Southern Bantu-speakers, one published in 1925 and the other two in 1937. The Nama papers deal with social organization, rites of transition, a Hottentot rain ceremony, and the social value of water. The papers on the Bantu-speaking peoples of South Africa discuss social organization, the sib and marriage ceremonies, and magic and medicine. |
