Abstract:The book is primarily an economic history which shows how agricultural development in East Africa has been influenced by changes in the organization of marketing. It also presents the background from which African nationalism unfolded. Its basic assumption is, that the nature of government intervention in agricultural marketing is best examined in terms of the character and the degree of restriction and facilitation. In East Africa restrictive measures became more prevalent than facilitative measures. The study attempts to analyze the cumulative effects of the former which have far outweighed the latter.
