Abstract: | This collection of case studies provides historical background for the understanding of African demography. Its principal goal is to show that population changes are historical processes, which vary from one period to another. A specific concern of the collection is to show the links between the evolution of the demographic regime and the history of capitalist penetration in Africa. The contributors not only examine the effects of slavery, colonialism, and capitalism on those societies, but also mark the resistance and resilience of many African institutions and individuals. As they outline the past and present diversity of African population dynamics, the contributors illuminate the ongoing process of economic and political change. Changes in settlement patterns, labour migration, and marriage and household structure, as well as the impact of health on fertility and mortality rates, form the major demographic themes of this volume. |
