Abstract:This is the sixth volume in a set of publications arising from a research programme on a policy-oriented systems study of the agricultural sectors of Jordan and Sudan. This programme adopted a pragmatic policy-oriented systems approach for the study of the agricultural sector which makes explicit the relationship between the farmer and the policymaker and relates as much to the institutional framework as to capital and technology. The present volume defines a conceptual model of Sudan's agricultural sector. The twenty contributions included identify a number of key policy issues and reveal the practical problems facing the expansion of agricultural production. The contributions are arranged under five subject headings: The place of food and agriculture in the economy (the role of the agricultural sector in the economy, background and economy of the Southern Sudan, supply and demand factors for agricultural products, supply and demand of agricultural labour); Farm systems (traditional smallholder rainfed crop production, farms in the Gezira, irrigated agriculture, the White Nile Pump Schemes, rainfed mechanized farming, livestock and poultry farming, forestry, fishing); Support systems (water supply factors, finance and credit, the marketing system); Technology transfer and feedback (agricultural research and extension); Policy formation (agricultural policy formation and administration).
