Abstract:The present report has been prepared by the United Nations, in cooperation with the Food and Agriculture Organization, in accordance with resolution 401(V) adopted by the General Assembly on 20 November, 1950. It describes the main features of agrarian structure in underdeveloped countries by means of examples and deals with the size and layout of farms, the various conditions of tenancy, agricultural credit, settlement of legal title to land and to water rights, communal tenure and the special problems presented by estates and plantations. The last two chapters provide a study of the relations between the agrarian structure and economic development, together with a summary and a statement of certain conclusions. Subsequently, on 7 September, 1951, the United Nations Economic and Social Council adopted a resolution requesting the Secretary-general to report periodically, at least every three years, on progress in land reform. These reports are published under the title 'PROGRESS IN LAND REFORM' and the user is referred to the alphabetical catalogue of serials for their location.
