| Abstract: | The two-figure thrones, powerful visual symbols of the Bamum kingship (Cameroon), present a complex set of questions, not all of which can be answered yet. Data drawn from archival materials and photographic evidence does allow conclusions on the historical sequence of the thrones. Beyond any doubt, the Museum für Völkerkunde in Berlin owns King Nsangu's throne, while his son Njoya's replica, produced in the years between 1907 and 1911, remains in the Palace Museum at Foumban. The way in which King Nsangu's throne came to Berlin casts an interesting light on the collection of ethnographical objects in the early colonial situation in Cameroon. It presents an aspect of colonialis and colonial entrepreneur ship that saw art as business as well as a passion for collecting. |
