Abstract:Focus is on 20 ethnic groups in the central area of Nigeria, the 'middle belt' states (formerly Benue, Plateau, and large parts of Niger, and Adamawa Provinces), where animism and Islam have had their most recent confrontation, and where both systems are presently interacting with Christianity. The author has observed traditional factors that influence the changes effected by Islam and the correspondence between traditional structures of religion and the type of Islam these structures produce. The study also accounts for the third option, Christianity, which has become increasingly important.
