Abstract:This book examines factors which influence the effect development activities have on the socio-economic position of marginal groups of people. Point of departure is the difference in character of two development endeavours in Kenya: the Ilkerin Loita Integral Development Project (1974-1978), principally a technical-economical endeavour, aimed to improve animal husbandry practices among the semi-nomadic Maasai, and the Development Education Programme (1978-1983), an adult education programme which used conscientization and group-dynamic methods to motivate people to undertake initiatives. The two projects are compared, as well as the theories behind both approaches. Finally, the conditions which influence the impact of development endeavours on the intended beneficiaries are explored.
