Abstract:In a paper on the economic status of Muslim minorities Shabbir Banoobhai, quoting a survey of the Institute of Social and Economic Research of the University of Durban-Westville, concludes that 'the survey dispels the notion that many South Africans have that the Muslims' economic position is significantly superior to that of their non-Muslim counterparts'. Aim of this paper is to examine the validity of the sample upon which the above conclusion rests and secondly to present the results of an income survey which among other objectives enabled an analysis to be made of the economic status of Muslim and non-Muslim Indians in Municipal Durban.
