Abstract: | A theory of the author on the conversion of African peoples to Islam and Christianity (Africa, 1971, p. 85-108) was followed by a vigorous critical response by H. Fisher (Africa, 1973, p. 27-40). In this article the author works out the position of the supreme being in the indigenous religion to refute F.'s objection that the theory fails to account for the way in which the position of the supreme being varies as between one indigenous religious system and another (part I), and outlines in detail the growth of Islam in West Africa to refute F.'s objection that the theory does not account for the results of African exposure to Islam (part II).
