Abstract:Liquor has long been at the centre of conflicts in South Africa. The authorities have tried to control the drinking of alcohol and to profit from it. Black resistance to these attempts has often been rooted in struggles over low wages and the harsh conditions of urban life. This book traces this history from early industrial times to the present. It illuminates both the making of industrial South Africa and the way in which working men and women have struggled to cope with hardships imposed upon them.
