Abstract:The author recorded over 100 stories told to her in the coastal village of Msoga, Tanzania, between 1984 amd 1985, while doing anthropological research on the position of women amongst the Kwere. She started to examine the linkages between narratives and society and became interested in studying the way in which subjectivity is constructed for women and men. This chapter first discusses the activity of storytelling in its village context. Then it offers synopses of four stories, followed by a functional analysis of the stories. Bibliogr., notes.
