| Abstract: | This report presents case studies describing the educational experiences of boys and girls in six districts of Kenya - Kwale, Mombasa, Nairobi, Kiambu, Kajiado, and Embu. In addition, it provides a profile of the educational situation of Kenyan girls. Despite the diversity in the sociocultural situation of the girls and boys in the six districts, certain common trends emerge. Kenyan girls stand an almost equal chance of enrolling in a primary school as Kenyan boys. However, girls' performance tends to decline in comparison with that of boys after lower primary and fewer girls make it to secondary school. Reasons for this difference include the non-serious attitude of girls towards schoolwork due to their belief that marriage is their destiny; premarital sex and pregnancies; and lack of time for study due to household tasks. |
