Abstract:Shows that past studies of labour migration in Sub-saharan Africa provide excellent data for answering central sociological questions such as: How do changing economic forces and social norms interact? What is the relationship between collective and individual factors? Which are the determinants of the small community's adaptability to change? The evidence from the study of labour migration being largely concerned with actual behaviour and the decision involved is superior to the kind of data sociologists have to content themselves with most of the time. The discussion deals with 1) The causes of labour migration (response to employment opportunities; relationship between economic and non-economic factors; urban employment and 2) The rural consequences of labour migration (political consequences; precarity of rural subsistence; transfer of wage income; adaptability of the rural community; economic benefits).
