| Abstract: | The author has studied the kinds of difficulties faced by multi-ethnic, sub-Saharan African states as they attended to the twin problems of military organisation and the control of the military: 'Military Organization in Multi-Ethnically Segmented Society: Some Comparative cases from Contemporary sub-Saharan Africa' (Cambridge, Mass., 1973), and 'Military Organization in Multi-Ethnically Segmented Society: A Theoretical Statement' (Syracuse N.Y., 1973). The present paper makes a critical examination of the colonial historical roots and sources of the problem. Sections: Introduction - On the concept of 'warrior tribes' - The ethnic calculus - The compartmentalized military structure - Antipathy towards education - The effects of World Wars I and II - Comparative colonial approaches - Conclusions.
